HOPE Gardens is a hybrid community garden and urban farm with a mission to empower local residents living in poverty and to provide learning experiences to students, all through the shared effort of sustainable gardening. It is a collaborative effort of the UNC-Chapel Hill Campus Y Homeless Outreach Poverty Eradication (HOPE) group, the Town of Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department, and the Town of Chapel Hill Active Living by Design Committee. rnrnHOPE Gardens serves as a transitional employment program for homeless participants. We provide an opportunity for participants to reestablish themselves as independent, productive citizens as they gain job skills, credentials, income, horticultural therapy, and social support. Participants grow, harvest, prepare, and market produce from the urban farm as well as participate in trainings and workshops. All revenue goes toward employees' wages, garden development, and programming for all participants. rnrnHOPE Gardens is also a community garden where community members can come together to grow fresh produce and learn from and alongside each other. Twenty five 4'x8' plots are available for yearly lease, and all are welcome to volunteer at the garden.
